See Darwin in One Day

IMG_5724Are you on a stopover between Australia and Asia or just have one day to spare? Here are my suggestions for seeing the best of Darwin.

In the cool of the early morning, as the sun rises over the harbour, stroll around the Darwin Waterfront. Wind through the Frangipanis, past the wave pool and the Convention Centre to follow the sea wall across the harbour. Maybe take a dip in the lagoon. Wander up the Smith Street Walkway and up to the mall for coffee or breakfast in one of the little Arcades tucked away and bursting with atmosphere.

On the way stop off at the The Museum and Art Gallery of the NT or Fannie Bay GaolCornucopia Café, located at the Museum is a great café overlooking the ocean and perfect for lunch or a coffee.

In the afternoon, there’s time to relax along the Esplanade. Wander through wide green parkland where a shady path hugs the coast with detours to historical and scenic lookouts. Check out the commemorative tiles that have been hand painted and displayed to honour 200 Remarkable Territorians and pause for a while at the Cenotaph.

The best place for that perfect tropical sunset overlooking Fannie Bay is either along Mindil Beach (take your own picnic) or the Sailing Club which also has a good bistro.
